Weegee the Famous: The Shock of Tabloid Photography

Whatcom Museum,
ARCO Exhibits Building

Tabloid photographer Arthur Fellig, commonly known by his nickname Weegee, worked on the gritty streets of New York City in the 1930s and 40s. He photographed gruesome crime and disaster scenes as well as images of high-society and everyday life in the city, always with an unparalleled honesty and realism. This exhibition will examine the photographer’s career through the presentation of over 80 of his photographs, as well as vintage audio footage and a recreation of his mobile "office," which was located in the trunk of his 1938 Chevy. At turns shocking, humorous, and beautiful, Weegee’s work remains among the most celebrated news photography of the twentieth-century. Sponsored in part by Friends of the Museum, Steve Brinn & Kirsten Barron, Bob & Sheila Goodwin, and Michael Petryni & Cheryl Crooks, and The Unity Group.
