Bert Huntoon and the Mt. Baker lodge

Whatcom Museum, 1892 Old City Hall, Rotunda Room

Take a trip back in time to discover our natural heritage and a bygone era through the lens of Bert Huntoon. Entrepreneur, engineer and developer, Huntoon was able to capture clarity and light in the natural terrain of Washington State's North Cascades region long before roads to these wilderness areas were constructed. In the early 1920s and throughout his lifetime, Huntoon actively promoted this natural beauty with clear, crisp photography. He was instrumental in the construction of the Mt. Baker Highway and the Grand Lodge at the end of the highway – a lodge comparable in design to Yosemite’s Ahwahnee or Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Inn that unfortunately was destroyed by fire a few years later. Promotional images were sent out to attract west coast adventurers, and movie makers vied to create their films here as well.
